A story from the baker . . .
"Way back in the early 1970’s, Dad retired from farming, sold the farm, and he and Mom moved to town. Mom decided to continue working at her job in town, so Dad suddenly had a lot of empty time on his hands. He tried gardening, which he was good at, but that was only for a few months

"Way back in the early 1970’s, Dad retired from farming, sold the farm, and he and Mom moved to town. Mom decided to continue working at her job in town, so Dad suddenly had a lot of empty time on his hands. He tried gardening, which he was good at, but that was only for a few months of the year. He tried woodworking, but the wood dust really compounded his breathing problems. He volunteered with a county agency to drive people to and from doctor appointments. This, he enjoyed. But as a man who had worked with his hands all of his life, he really needed the satisfaction of making something.
While we were growing up, Mom taught her four sons to bake cookies, so Dad thought he would give that a try. It turned out that he really enjoyed it! After a little trial and error, and some coaching from Mom, he really became quite a good cookie baker. He would carefully make all of the cookies the same size, and store them in the freezer in an empty Pringles’ potato chip tube. Those cookies would disappear in a hurry when the neighbor kids or the grandkids would show up. I remember chocolate chip, butterscotch chip, oatmeal, and a few others, but the favorite of just about everyone was the molasses cookie. Soft, chewy, sugar coated, baked to perfection, melt-in-your-mouth delicious!"
